Why does my electric water heater keep tripping the breaker?

The most common cause is a heating element that has shorted to the tank. Other causes are a thermostat stuck on so the high-limit switch trips, loose or burned wires at the terminals, a worn breaker, or water reaching the electrical parts from a leak. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call (949) 693-0298.

Electric water heaters run on 240 volts. Do not open the access panels with the power on. Our water heater repair mission viejo technicians test elements, thermostats and wiring safely.

Is it the breaker or the red reset button?

They are two different safety devices. The breaker in your panel trips when the heater draws too much current, usually a short. The red reset button on the heater (the high-limit switch) trips when the water gets too hot, usually a stuck thermostat or a shorted element.

  • Breaker trips: look for a shorted element, a wiring fault or a worn breaker.
  • Red button pops: look for a stuck thermostat or an element that will not shut off.
  • Both: a shorted element is the most likely cause.

How do heating elements fail?

Mission Viejo's hard water leaves scale on the lower element. Scale makes it run hotter, and over time the metal sheath cracks. Water gets inside, the element shorts to the tank, and the breaker trips. A dry-fired element, one turned on before the tank was full, burns out right away.

Element and thermostat repairs usually cost about $200 to $450. A yearly flush slows scale buildup. See our water heater flush guide for how it helps.

What can you safely check?

With the breaker off, look around the base of the heater for water and check the panel for a burned smell or a warm breaker. Note whether the breaker trips right away or after the heater runs for a while. That timing helps the technician.

  • Trips instantly: usually a dead short in an element or wiring.
  • Trips after a while: often a weak element or an overheating breaker.
  • Water near the heater: do not reset. A leak and electricity together need a pro.

If you find water at the base, read water heater leaking from the bottom.

Should you repair or replace it?

If the tank is under about 10 years old and dry, a new element, thermostat or wire repair is usually worth it. If the tank leaks, or it is old and has failed elements more than once, replacement often makes more sense.

A standard 40 to 50 gallon tank costs about $1,900 to $3,800 installed. A heat pump water heater runs about $4,000 to $7,000 before rebates and uses far less power. See our water heater replacement and installation page.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to keep resetting my water heater breaker?

No. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and have the heater checked. Repeated tripping points to a short or overheating.

What does the red reset button on a water heater do?

It is the high-limit switch. It cuts power if the water gets too hot, usually from a stuck thermostat or a shorted element.

How much does it cost to replace a water heater element?

Element and thermostat repairs usually cost about $200 to $450 in Mission Viejo.

Can a bad breaker cause a water heater to trip?

Yes. An old or worn breaker can trip under a normal load. An electrician can test it if the heater checks out fine.
